Most people understand that a computer's software program has the footprint of human handiwork. Coming from this perspective, one could present a convincing argument based on certain words in the Quran, of how genetic encoded information embedded in all living things similarly points to the signature (existence) of God.
Scientists who are dumbfounded by the sophistication of complex encoded information existing on our DNA structure, have resorted to using terms such as “magical” source or from “extraterrestrial entities”, rather than attribute DNA’s complexity as evidence of a purposeful design, which is in fact “a footprint” left by its source/ creator. Using a fresh overview of the Quran, this article will attempt to unlock the layers of deeper meaning using the simple words of the average Quranic translations to demonstrate the many similarities between these words and modern scientific definitions of DNA.
Some may make the argument, that this is just a Muslim apologist attempt to revise the meaning of Quran to fit a more scientific narrative. However, this is due to their lack of knowledge or ignorance of the chronicles of Quranic Arabic literature containing rich/complex words that were introduced for the first time in 7th century Arabia. This unfamiliarity of new literature standards at times led to translators of the Quran using words that were inconsistent with or even contradictory to the original Arabic root words. To avoid such mistranslations, this research will always use words which are not only consistent/congruent with the classical Arabic root meanings, but also fit the narrative of the related ayat (paragraphs). This should not really be a surprise for well informed readers, since one could make the same argument with the much improved English language upon the arrival of the Shakespeare body of literature. By not straying grammatically from the Quranic Arabic root words, we intend to shed light on the fact that evidence points to life being intentionally designed and that modern scientific knowledge about the complexities of living things are completely consistent.
Evidence of Human Genome:
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِ الْمَوْتَى وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآثَارَهُمْ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أحْصَيْنَاه ُُ فِي إِمَام ٍ مُبِين ٍ
“We revive the dead and record whatever they have sent on ahead and [left] as traces(footprint);
We أَحْصَيْنَا(calculate or count) everything in an clear إِمَامٍ(pattern or model).”
This biological reference to the human body is quite revealing in the above ayah. A closer examination would seem more analogous to the DNA structure with its genetic encoded information. Here are the reasons why:
1. The first part of this ayah mentions how Allah has recorded (kitab) “what man has sent on ahead” which would be consistent with the human genome passed on to the next generation (e.g the y and x chromosomes).
2. “What they have left behind/ or “footprint” is aligned with the DNA involved with our genetic identification. Recently, advanced research of the mitochondrial genome has led scientists to trace the genealogy of a mummified body, known as the Ice-man, that was preserved for more than five thousand years in the Otztal Alps cave. Not only were scientists able to trace his genealogy, but also other genetic materials of the environment where he lived.
3. The Arabic “ahsai” also means "calculate" or "compute", and if taken into consideration, the rest of the content of the paragraph, it could only mean encoded information present in our genes.
4. The last part “clear model” in Arabic means something that is self-evident (mubin); distinguishing the right from the wrong, (such as the Quran.) What could be more self-evident than DNA genetic fingerprinting, which is accurately used to determine one’s ancestry as well as to positively identify and prosecute a criminal perpetrator.
5. This ayah not only points out how man's ecological footprint is preserved, but how all of man's actions are calculated and stored in a prototype/model (imam), normally represented by the DNA double helix structure.
Importance of Measurement (Qadr)
“For, no single thing exists that does not have its source with Us; and nought do
We bestow from on high unless it be in accordance with a measure well-defined”
Intriguingly, the Quran states how Allah sends down everything with a known measure (qadr), which without a doubt lends another convincing argument to the above explanation of the measurement of (quantum) particles. Had this phenomenon not occurred, technicians would have never been able to design an MRI machine, nor would anthropologists be capable of reading information that is embedded in bio-chemicals to find out more about Ice-man’s genetic background.
Readers who are having difficulties with what measuring information represents, should not be too disappointed, since many scientists themselves struggle with this concept. Some examples of measuring are the X-ray or MRI machine that scans our body; it uses electrons from magnetic light waves that become entangled (quantum entanglement) with another electron from an atom in our body, which then generates a measurement for the machine instrument to read. It must be noted, it is only after such measurement is observed, that it is then permanently stored and becomes part of “classical science”, for humans to use for any future calculations.
“Why - [How could we be resurrected] after we have died and become mere dust?
Such a return seems far-fetched indeed!”
We (Allah) know how the earth consumes their bodies, for with Us is a record unfailing..”
This ayah further supports the concept of preservation of encoded information, even when we pass away and the particles of our bodies are scattered. The latter part of the next verse “for Us is a record unfailing” seems to be very much synonymous with encoded information that is preserved (after coherence of quantum particles) in bio-chemicals so they could be read/measured by geneticists.
Interestingly, scientists recently discovered a new approach to tracing the extinction of species.
e.g :
The above illustration as described by physicists Jim Al-Khalili and Johnjoe Mcfadden (Life on the Edge, p. 209, hardcopy), explains how measurement (encoded information) occurs on the DNA double helix structure at the hydrogen bond. This could only be explained in quantum physics through a phenomenon known as quantum tunneling between two hydrogen nuclei atoms (deuterium: 1 proton and 1 neutron), one from each opposite side of the nucleotide base. At this point the spark of life begins (which the Quran refers to as “hayy”) and the enzymatic DNA machinery starts the process of transferring the sequencing (nucleotides) encoded information into the RNA.
The single strand RNA then carries the genetic messages from the chromosome around the cell to the protein synthesis machine and instructs amino acids to produce proteins, (Jim Al-Khalili/Johnjoe MCFadden: Life on the Edge). So mRNA enzymatic processes are more akin to a life generating machine capable of replicating itself. This process cannot be explained through statistical science (derived from the law of thermodynamics/classical science) and is inconsistent with the evolutionary theory explanation. This quantum phenomena and the RNA protein self-replicate machinery also serves to demonstrate how the “natural selection” theory is a mere guesswork that has no scientific basis.
Interestingly, this process of reading stored information seems to have amazing similarities with the stored information (kitab) preserved in the words of the Quran (It’s actual meaning: to recite) designed to be read by an observer. Muslims who possess an acute grasp on the epistemology of the Quran, know that the information of Allah's word are embedded in the sequences of Arabic letters. The original revelation Quranic Arabic text did not come with vowels, since its the sequencing of the Arabic letters and words that determine its pronunciation and meanings.
The merging of two separate nuclei normally only occurs in stars such as our sun where the temperature is millions of degrees. This should serve as a reminder, to especially Muslims, how Allah is capable of bringing into existence unexplainable phenomenons that will make modern day scientists dumbfounded. This state of quantum coherence occurs spontaneously every time a measurement is conducted, which supports Schrodinger’s theory that life begins from order to order; in other words, evolution and natural selection are inconsistent/incongruent with complex DNA encoded information processes.
“He is God; the Al-Khalaq (the One who brings into existence through measurement/proportion
( from nothing) , the Fashioner (al-Bari), the Designer (al-Mosawir).
To Him belong the most beautiful names.
Glorifying Him is everything in the heavens and the earth. He is the Noble, the Wise.”
This ayah propounded how Allah is the One, (which is one of the names of Allah) who measures ( الْخَالِقُ) all matter into existence through proportion, then creates ( الْبَارِ ) and designs its shape ( الْمُصَوِّرُ). Known British Physicist Paul Davies explains (see: The Origin of Life) how the encoded information in our DNA is comparable to the complex algorithms of computer software used by the computer’s hardware.
He also stated how encoded information is the first process in DNA which activates the RNA’s self-replicating machinery. Interestingly, later in his career he conceded how evolution only began when something (DNA base) was already in existence, and natural selection (survival of the fittest) is incapable of explaining the origin of life. Recently he conceded evolution is only possible when there is something already in existence (e.g single cell bacteria). Though he states in his earlier writings, (The Origin of Life), “the genetic enzymatic process in a living cell is more akin to a complex mathematical algorithm, it cannot explain through evolution.”
Especially since cosmological evolution, as defined by classical/statistical science, begins when the first element was formed (some years after the so-called “Big Bang”). So the amount of sequencing of particles for a single strand RNA base to be formed by accident, would far exceed the total particles currently existing in the universe. In other words, there is no mathematical/scientific evidence to explain evolution.
Also, as Jim Khalili and Johnjoe McFadden, explained in “Life on the Edge”, the genetic process in a living cell can only be explained through Quantum phenomenon.
" ... and by [all] this We bring dead land to life: [and] even so will be [man’s] coming-forth from death."
Recently, some researchers posited dormant seeds are able to come back alive due to a unique gene they possess, which they ironically coined “resurrection gene." Interestingly, something analogous to what the Quran describes is how Allah brings the dead land alive again. But equally this newly discovered resurrection gene of plants may very well exist on the human DNA genome, something that may have yet to be discovered by scientists. It is quite revealing, if one would carefully observe the flow of information in the following verses; it mentions there is a process /stages required for inanimate matter to turn into life. This is what the Quran describes as “to activate” (hayy), something much similar to scientific descriptions of the activation of the DNA enzymatic synthesis machinery (catalyst).
“And God is the One who sends the winds so it stirs (swirls) up a cloud,
then We drive it to a land that is dead, and We revive with it the earth after it has died.
Such is the resurrection.”
The Quantum phenomenon of Water
Scientists believe water is the link between the living and nonliving. Unknownst to them the Quran has stated this link more than 1400 hundreds years ago. The Quran highlights the necessity of water as an essential requirement needed for the barren/dry land to come alive and presents that as an analogy to our own resurrection. Due to the special characteristics of water molecule structures, two positive hydrogen and one negative oxygen, the negative oxygen atom(e.g amino acids molecules) will always bond with one of its positive hydrogen atoms leaving one positive atom to attract to the next molecule and so on.
“And give them the example of this worldly life is like a water which We have sent down from the sky,
so that the ِِ نَبَاتُ (seeds, germinate/plants) of the earth mix with it/co-mingle and
it becomes dry twigs being moved by the wind. And God مُقْتَدِرا (measures) all things.” 18:45
This ayah stresses the point of how the germination of seeds goes through a process, when Allah conducts its measurements. The polarity cohesion between water molecules and carbon are where these measurements occur, similar to the quantum phenomenon we have seen earlier between the hydrogen bonds of the DNA double helix structure.
Also, the latter part of this brings a cycle of life to our attention to the dried plants becoming dry stalks stirred up by the wind to then become once again organic matter.
According to T.B.Irving’s interpretation:
"Among His signs, you see how desolate the earth is; yet whenever We send water down upon it, اهْتَزَّتْ (stirs, vibration) and sprouts. The One Who “hayy” (alive, activates, energizes) it is the Reviver of the dead; He “qadr” (measures) everything!" (49:31)
“And from among His signs is that you see the land still, then, as soon as We send down the water upon it, it shakes and grows. Surely, the One who revived it can revive the dead. He is capable of all things.”
Here the Quran states after the co-mingling with water, a catalytic reaction/vibration occurs, so the word “hayy” (energize, activate) seems to be very much in line with the catalyst of the DNA enzymatic process that begins copying encoded information into the RNA (single strand). Interestingly, these verses usually follow by stating “Allah measures all things”. These verses from the Quran are consistent with describing the encoding process explained in quantum mechanics, e.g. when water molecules jiggle their way into the molecules of amino acids it sends an encoded message. While the development of the human embryo is somewhat different. The Quran in Chapter Al-Hajj (22:5) juxtaposes it with the germination of plant seed:
“O people, if you are in doubt as to the resurrection, then We have created you from dust (earth dust e.g. organic compound), then from a seed (نُطْفَة , a feminine word)”.
In Quran verse 76:2, Allah also speaks of creating humans from a mixture of fluid (e.g. fertilization of the egg). Quran 22.5 continues describing the stages of the creation of humans from dust, to seed, to an embryo, then a fetus, “developed and undeveloped, so that We make it clear to you. And We settle in the wombs what We wish to an appointed time, then We bring you out a child, then you reach your maturity, and of you are those who will pass away, and of you are those who are sent to an old age where he will not be able to learn any new knowledge after what he already has. And you see the land still, but when We send down the water to it, it vibrates and grows, and it brings forth every lovely pair.”

Some non-Muslim critics will argue, “If what you are asserting is really true, where are the measurements or equations mentioned in the Quran?” While such questions may leave some Muslim intellectuals dumfounded, an astute student of the Quran could present a much more cogent rebuttal: “Where do you think researchers (by using electron-microscopes in a laboratory) got the measurement in the first place anyway? '' Scientists do not create measurement out of nothing. The Quran on numerous occasions clearly states how Allah measured all matter e.g. enabling the process of DNA sequences to be translated by the RNA synthesis machinery. Now it would have been a much weaker argument for Muslims to make (this site does not speak for other religions), had the Quran not clearly illustrated how Allah has made measurement and calculation of everything (see: Quran 15:21; 18:49). Physicist Vlatko Vedral candidly admits he and other scientists just believe in their hypothesis and are merely speculating how the presence of “encoded information” is what caused the first spark of the beginning of the universe. But his logic denying that God is the cause would mean an infinite regression of “causes." Seems rather self-defeating since one could make the same argument on “information” being the originator of the universe. Besides, in Islam, the concept of God, is antithetical with the definition of infinite regression.
“He said: "No, your lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the One who initiated them. And I bear witness to such." 21:56 "Initiator of the heavens and the earth. He created for you from among yourselves mates, and also mates for the livestock so they may multiply. There is nothing that equals Him. He is the Hearer, the Seer." 42:11
The Quran describes, Allah is the source of all information, so for man to attempt to then use the same limited information to prove/disprove His existence would be more synonymous to measuring infinity (quantum particles exist in an infinite quantum state), or the number zero (everything appears out of nowhere). Also, we humans are genetically wired through statistical science, therefore, making us incapable of measuring the origin of God, similar to a quantum phenomena such as: entanglement/superposition, tunneling and quantum particles in an infinite state. The Quran in a clear and concise manner, sums up measuring of God in the following ayah:
“They measure not Allah His true measure. Lo! Allah is Strong, Almighty.”
